POSITION DESCRIPTION


 Natividad is accepting applications for Staff Nurse I in various units. The Staff Nurse I is typically a re-entry nurse, or a SNF nurse. Under the supervision of the Supervising/Charge Nurse, this incumbent performs professional nursing duties in the care and service of patients and their families; provides direct and indirect patient care in the inpatient care setting. Provides care that reflects initiative, flexibility and responsibility in a professional and timely manner. Communicates with physician or charge nurse about changes in patient status, and results of abnormal diagnostic tests. The Staff Nurse I is expected to work at the full scope of their licensure providing clinical care with a deceasing amount of supervision.  

Natividad may offer up to a $5,000.00 sign-on bonus to candidates hired into a permanent full-time position and upon promotion to Staff Nurse II (Estimated period, 6 months).

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS


This is the entry level in the professional Staff Nurse series. Under close supervision, incumbents perform routine patient care assignments and receive comprehensive in-service training. They are expected to promote to the journey level of Staff Nurse II after acquiring the appropriate experience and demonstrating satisfactory performance. This position is distinguished from the next higher level of Staff Nurse II in that the latter is expected to perform the full range of nursing duties with minimal supervision and only periodic in-service training.

THE SIGNIFICANT DUTIES OF THE POSITION ARE AS FOLLOWS:

 

  • Provides overall patient care appropriate to the nursing care plan
  • Manages the stable patients under the direct supervision of Charge/Supervising RN
  • Provides teaching and support with patient and Family
  • Notifies supervising RN and Health Care provider of negative change in patient status in a timely manner
  • Demonstrates understandings of the pharmacokinetics and safe administration of common medications used for the treatment of patients in their assigned area
  • Demonstrates the ability to safely administer routine Medications by PO, IM SQ and rectal routes
  • Provides care for families (adult, adolescent, newborns) with considerations for their developmental levels
  • Maintain a safe, comfortable and therapeutic environment for patients and families in accordance with hospital standards
  • Properly prepare, hang, monitor and discontinue IV fluids and blood/blood components
  • Acts as a patient advocate
  • Develops a written plan of care
  • Assists physician with patients
  • Monitors intake and output for patients
  • Completes accurate documentation of patient care
  • Provides ongoing assessment of the patient status changes
  • Communicates to the supervising RN the need to change a course of nursing actions based upon change in the patient's condition
  • Demonstrates ability to follow chain of command, as situation demands and delegates appropriately to the nursing assistant (NA) or medical unit clerk (MUC)
  • Evaluates patient response to pain interventions including pharmacological and non- pharmacological
  • Demonstrates proper use of equipment for unit assigned

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

REQUIRED License/Certificates: Possession of a valid CA RN License or a valid CA RN Interim Permit. (Please ensure to list your RN license number on the application)

Due to the considerable difference in patient profiles, work conditions and responsibilities, each of the clinical areas require a distinct mix of knowledge, skills and abilities. Applicants must possess a combination of education, training and/or experience which demonstrate competency in the appropriate mixture of qualifications.
 
 Thorough Knowledge of:

  • Current theory, principles, techniques and procedures used in professional nursing
  • Medical terminology, medical instruments and equipment
  • Routines typical to an acute-care hospital
  • The uses and effects of medicines and narcotics
  • Federal, State and local laws and regulations that govern the nursing
  • Current treatments, drugs and equipment associated with an area of specialization

Working Knowledge of:

  • Community resource available to provide patient care and follow-up
  • Computer applications related to nursing
  • Principles and practices of quality assurance
  • Safety policies and procedures related to nursing

Skill and Ability to:

  • Perform the full range of registered nursing duties and responsibilities
  • Plan and organize nursing plans for patients
  • Prepare and maintain records and reports
  • Analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action
  • Provide excellent customer service and establish and maintain effective working relationships
  • Keep abreast of developments in area of nursing specialization

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
  • In accordance with the California Health Care Worker COVID Vaccine Requirement, all workers who work in a General Acute Care Hospital must be fully COVID vaccinated, and if eligible, must have the booster dose.
  • Natividad requires that all incumbents pass a pre-employment physical/medical assessment.
  • Natividad will conduct a thorough background and reference check process which includes a Department of Justice fingerprint check.
  • Employees who drive on County business to carry out job related duties must possess a valid CA Driver License for the class vehicle driven.
  • Employees must have and show their original Social Security Card and a valid CA Driver License or CA State ID prior to the first day of work.
  • Incumbents may be required to work all shifts, including weekends and holidays;
  • Incumbents may be required to work with potentially hazardous and infectious substances.
